Lasers & Light : Photodynamic Therapy

Precancerous lesions called actinic keratoses, as well as superficial basal cell and superficial squamous cell carcinomas, may be amenable to the-non surgical treatment of photodynamic therapy (PDT).

With PDT, a photosensitizing chemical called amino levulinic acid (ALA) is applied topically or injected into the lesion(s).  The ALA  accumulates more readily in cancer cells than in normal cells.  Laser or light irradiation is then used at the site to preferentially target the chemical within the cancer cells.  PDT avoids prolonged recovery time and possible scarring.

“PDT may also be used for larger basal cell and squamous cell cancers prior to planned surgery to decrease the overall size,” says Dr. Franks.
